As I framed it to Garth’s publicist, it might be interesting to think about the work in academic terms. As I told more and more friends about this new gay novel apparently making waves across the Atlantic, I thought I should probably get my hands on a copy to check it out for myself. It was covered in the Guardian, London Review of Books, and the New York Times, and discussed by queer theory enthusiasts at Queen Mary (so basically me, to several undergraduates trying to politely ignore me). Garth Greenwell and this beautiful bookcover suddenly seemed to be everywhere. But I had one of those experiences where once you’ve heard of someone o The review was almost hyperbolic in its breathless praise for the book, which piqued my interest, only to find it wasn’t yet available in the U.K. I first heard about Garth Greenwell and his new novel, What Belongs to You, via a pre-release review in a U.S.

But his title at the college - director of Civil War era studies - makes clear that his franchise covers not just combat but everything about the war, and he exercises it fully in this rich, original work. He knows every street, every knoll and every gully. Guelzo has been positioned to scout the town and its surroundings as closely as anyone has ever done, even the soldiers who fought there and the authors who have written whole books about each turn in the three-day battle. "The stories in this book began as scripts about Roman Scotland, which I wrote for Radio Scotland to produce as part of a series called "Stories from Scottish History." I loved writing them, but I got very cramped and frustrated by all the things I wanted to put in but had to leave out because there wasn't room for them in a twenty-minute script. Some of his manga have been based on his life and its events for example his grandfather was a real life Yakuza and his father used to be a pig farmer with a spider tattoo on his back.
